The birthstone for November is the Topaz. Topaz may come from the Sanskrit word “tapas” meaning “heat” or “fire”. Topaz in its natural state is colorless but by adding heat or tiny amounts of impurities can be blue, golden brown, yellow orange, pale green, pink or purple.

Topaz is a symbol of friendship and optimism and the state gemstone of Utah. Blue Topaz is the gemstone of Texas. It was thought that it increased mental powers and cured lunacy. Some ancient Romans believed that attaching it to the left arm warded off the “evil eye”. I wonder what it would do for you if worn on the right arm???

November’s secondary birthstone is Citrine. Traditionally, Topaz was the birthstone for November and remains so today.
