The 4Cs...

Cut can be the most important quality if you are choosing a round stone. The cut will showcase the brilliance, fire and sparkle of the diamond.

Color is really the lack of color. The less color, the higher the grade. The color grade of D-K are desirable for the center diamond of an engagement ring.

Clarity is usually determined last. It deals with the tiny imperfections of the stone. 

Carat Weight is the unit of weight but it can also give an approximation of the size. 

Many people start with size first since this is the most visible aspect of the stone.
